The seven parts of these two sets of books constitute a collection of 1000+ pages of music. Each part contains about 170 pages. The variations are the work of 44 composers, most of whom are members of the American Guild of Organists.
The “variation” form implies a composition of multiple sections, each based on the subject melody. Most of the individual sections here will stand alone; use can therefore be tailored to fit the needs and wishes of the performer as to length, difficulty level, or the number of variations to be played at a particular time. Two to 12 variations make up each set. There are fold-out pages for almost all longer variations.
Many of the hymn tunes used will be recognized as “friends” by church congregation members. If a hymn tune sets one of the hymns being sung in a service, it seems particularly apt to play variations based on the tune being sung.
The compositions cover a wide range of styles, from “traditional” to “contemporary” in harmonic flavor. The difficulty range is “easy” to “moderate,” with a few toccatas thrown in.
